Competency-Based Learning

IMG_4447Competency-based programs involve students earning credit based on tests, portfolios, clinical observations, prior learning assessments and other evaluations of knowledge are likely the wave of the future in higher education. Currently, there are only a few universities (Western Governors University, Southern New Hampshire, Excelsior College, etc.). Accreditors are still not in agreement about how to compare the results from these programs with more traditional approaches to higher education. Competency-based learning is earning increased acceptance from legislatures and boards who view them as a way of improving college completion and satisfying employers.
